Ara Najarian and Vartan Gharpetian Supported LGBT+ Rights in 2019

Sometimes we go through the City Council archives for fun. In this September 24, 2019 meeting, you can see then-mayor Ara Najarian, the current longest-serving councilman, and Vartan Gharpetian (in his first term).

The men are responding to public comment from a local student inviting them to Pride activities for the newly-established Ally Week within their GUSD school. (Note: This is deep into the Trump era, but before the extremist far right decided to target LGBTQ issues in local governments.)

Less than 5 years later, Najarian would be spouting lies about kids "learning oral sex" during distance learning in Glendale public schools. As a result, his fellow councilmembers refused to vote for him for the ceremonial mayor position.

Did Najarian remember his 2019 comments? Nope. He decided to sue the city through his son's law firm, a case that was promptly thrown out, but not before it cost the Glendale taxpayers around $60,000 in legal fees. Najarian has never apologized publicly for the damaging and dangerous lies he has told about GUSD public schools.

Vartan Gharpetian continues to hem and haw about greenhouse gases, never taking any responsibility for city council decisions (even ones he's been a part of), unless it's protecting landlords. He does enjoy driving his vintage cars extremely fast down residential streets in his spare time. He also endorsed Aneta Krpekyan for school board despite of (or because of?) her hostility to the LGBTQ+ community.
